Have you ever witnessed a child’s eyes lighten when they cracked the code to a word? As if magic were happening. In our esl learning apps class, we sprinkle a little literary pixie powder and watch young minds soar. We read here, but we’re also on adventures.
Imagine the room erupting in excitement as kids gather with their books, ready to plunge into another realm. Knights battle dragons. Astronauts fly through space. And detectives solve the most complex mysteries. Every session takes us on an odyssey of words that dance and leap off the screen.
But let’s be honest for a few seconds. Teaching children to read is not all rainbows and butterflies. It’s not always easy to teach kids how to read. Some days, it’s smooth sailing. Others feel like wading though molasses. It’s these moments of “aha!” that make it all worth it.
You may be wondering now how we can keep these young adventurers occupied without them zoning-out or becoming book zombies. The secret ingredient? Variety! Variety! We have more variety than a disc jockey at a birthday party. Next day we will dive into poetry, with rhythm and rhymes that Dr. Seuss would be proud of.
But don’t forget the games! Ah yes, our secret weapon is to play games. The learning process becomes less boring and more exciting when you use games like word scavenger searches or spelling contests.
There are many different ways that children learn. Some sprint while others take their time reading. It’s totally okay. It’s more than okay. In fact, this is fantastic! Accepting the differences is important because not all people are alike.
Remember when your teacher used to give you gold medals for good work as a child? Well, now we’ve taken things a few notches further. We celebrate every small victory because we believe that each achievement is important, whether it is a simple word mastery or completing their first chapter on their own.
